Mental Health

I. Promoting Positive Behaviors
American Preparatory Academy will provide curriculum, activities, and other opportunities to actively promote positive behaviors and address mental health topics including peer pressure, mental health, creating meaningful relationships, suicide prevention, student use of tobacco, alcohol, electronic cigarette products, and other controlled substances. Such activities may include but are not limited to:

  • Ambassador Program (grades 7-12)
  • White Ribbon Week (internet safety)
  • Parent empowerment meetings
  • "Seven Habits for Highly Successful Teens" by Covey
  • Hope4Utah - Hope Squad (suicide prevention)
A. American Preparatory Academy uses an approved evidence-based underage drinking and substance abuse prevention program as required by Utah law (Utah Code 53G-10-406).
B. American Preparatory Academy shall ensure that parental involvement occurs in cases where the information collected from a student would generally raise privacy concerns. I-8.4 Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA)
C. American Preparatory Academy employees are required to follow the following policies in relation to student mental health. D-5.1.1 Staff To Parent Medical Recommendations

II. Parent Involvement
American Preparatory Academy provides school-sponsored parent seminars that cover the topics of substance misuse and prevention, bullying, mental health, internet safety, and the SafeUT crisis line. (Utah Code 53G-9-703). The American Preparatory Academy behavior plan includes a parent intervention, which allows parents to view their student in their learning activities at school so they can provide the needed supports and structures at home to assist the student in finding success at school.

III.  Student Mental Health and Wellness

Research is conclusive that students who engage in internet social media and have access to internet-based personal devices experience higher rates of anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation.  American Preparatory Academy recommends that students have no access to internet-based personal devices until age 16 or later.  Parents are asked to support this recommendation so that we can create a community of safety for our students, where their peers also do not have or share internet based social media, preventing student peer to peer exposure to unsupervised internet content.  Non-internet based devices that provide communication between student and parents are readily available as a substitute.
