Section 7.3 Course Grade Forgiveness Definitions Comparable course: A course that fulfills the same graduation credit requirements as a course for which a student seeks to improve a grade. APA will determine if the course is truly comparable. Recurring course: A course that a student takes more than once to: (a) further the student's understanding and skills in the course subject, such as journalism or band; or (b) satisfy a different credit requirement that the course may fulfill, such as an art class that fulfills an elective requirement and an art requirement. Policy Statement A student in grades 9-12 may repeat a course or enroll in a comparable course to improve the course grade received by the student. The student will not receive credit for completing the course more than once. Taking a recurring course will not replace a previous grade in that course. The student will receive additional elective credit for taking a recurring course. Course Grade Forgiveness is not available for grades K-8. Process for Replacement of Grade - When a student earns a higher grade in an approved replacement course, the school counselor shall adjust the student's course grade and grade point average on the student's record to reflect the student's highest grade and exclude the lower grade.
- The student's permanent record shall accurately reflect the name of the course taken, the reporting period in which the course was taken and in which the highest grade was received, and the school and entity from that reporting period.
- The student's transcript may not indicate that the student repeated a course or received a lower grade for the course.
Credit Recovery: Students in grades 9-12 needing credit recovery may utilize course grade forgiveness (State Code R277-717-3), or may utilize credit recovery options either within APA or through other accredited institutions. American Prep will accept a total of 6 packets of supplemental Academic Work toward graduation. The student shall work with the counseling department to discuss their credit recovery options and fill out the Credit Recovery Options Form.
